Market Report for May 24
photos and article by Chris Moore

FlowersSunny and pleasant, the NFM market offered a variety of produce - predicted to increase in the coming weeks. Sightings this past Sunday included radishes, sugar peas, mint, spinach, asparagus, beautiful green onions, leeks, and a huge morel mushroom from J&R Farms (see right).

FlowersWhile we watch as the growing season reaches full swing, have you considered planting your own plants? We have many vendors selling healthy, strong plants. For example, Blue Moon Community Farms has a huge variety tomatoes that include window box Roma, Valencia, Rose De Berne, Red Zebra, Green Zebra, to name a few. Troy Community Farm has cherry tomatoes and tomatillos. Plus, the most important part - you can ask the farmers advice on how best to take care of the plant. By the way, if you need a way to carry your plants, check out the innovative plant carrier pictured at the left.

While you may think our market runs itself, it takes many wonderful volunteers to make it happen. Last Sunday we had a special volunteer, one who was a hit with kids - the gentle Count Basie (see below).

    Woof.

Hope to see you next week at the Market!

LeekCreamed Leeks
With a more delicate and sweeter flavor than onions, leeks add a subtle touch to recipes without overpowering the other flavors that are present.

Ingredients
8 large leeks, cleaned
1 cup milk
1/4 cup butter, divided
2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
salt and pepper to taste

Directions
1. Cut cleaned leeks into bite sized pieces.

2. In large skillet, cover and simmer in a small amount of water until tender (30 min).

3. Rinse with cold water; then drain.

4. Set aside in serving dish, keep warm.

5. Melt 2 Tbsp of butter in a skillet over low heat. Add flour, stirring until smooth. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, until sauce is thick and bubbly.

6. Stir in remaining butter and season to taste.

7. Pour the sauce over prepared leeks and serve immediately.
